While we were in Europe last year, cooking was difficult. For the first month, we moved from city to city every 2 to 5 days. Think about all of the staples you keep in your kitchen. Flour, sugar, different kinds of oil, spices, sauces, condiments, etc. We didn't want to buy many staples only to have to throw them away a couple of days later, and we didn't have room in our packs. When we traveled by train to get to our next destination, David carried a bag with just a few staples like olive oil, garlic, small bag of flour, and salt, along with lunch for the day and a few other things. I really missed having spices to cook with. I bought a couple bottles of spices, but still really missed having more.
So, right before we left Utah to come to New Zealand, my mom let me go through her spices. Thanks mom! I bought little ziploc bags (in the jewelry making craft area at Walmart) to keep the spices in, and labeled each bag with a sharpie. This has helped so much. If we do anything like this trip again, I will bring spices with us. I haven't cooked exactly like I do back at home because some of the food is harder to find, but cooking has been a lot easier.
I also wanted to create a post with some of the food our family has tried while we have been here. We love trying snacks and treats in other countries. So fun!
My bag of spices.
This is a powdered drink mix that seems to be quite popular in New Zealand.
I don't think my kids were a fan of this.
We had never tried hot cross buns, other than playing the song on the recorder!
I love how the box says "she'll be right."
We didn't buy this but we liked the label.
"It's right up there." What does that mean?
More treats, unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the kids' favorite candy bar - Moro Gold.
We didn't buy this but the packaging is fun.
Their cheap ramen comes with more seasoning packets than what we have bought in the US.
Inside Pak N Save, the grocery store we usually went to because of their lower prices.
The top package has Hokey Pokey, which is a very popular treat there. It is honeycomb and comes in candy and ice cream.
Their version of Raisin Bran.
Instead of this being by General Mills, it is Uncle Tobys.
Meat pies are quite popular.
Here are the baked pies.
They seem to eat a lot of sausages.
